
Born in Hungary, Dora Seres studied at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest with Professor Lorant Kovacs and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich with Professor Andras Adorjan. She made her PhD studies at the Franz Liszt Music Academy 2002-2005. She participated in several master classes with Emmanuel Pahud, Auréle Nicolet, William Bennett and Paula Robison.
Dora won several prizes at international flute competitions, such as first prize and special prizes at the “Prague Spring” International Flute Competition ( 2001 ), second prize at the International Flute Competition in Kobe, Japan ( 2001 ), second prize at the International Flute Competition in Markneukirchen, Germany ( 2002 ) and second prize in the “Schubert and Modern” Chamber Music Competition in the category of flute-piano with Emese Mali in Graz, Austria. (2003 ) No first prize was given. In 2003 September Dora won 1st prize in the International Flute Competition in Budapest as well.
Due to these prizes she received an invitation to play at the Prague Spring Festival in Dvorák Hall of Rudolfinum in 2002, where she performed C.Ph.E.Bach Flute Concerto in D-minor and Ilja Hurnik`s Concerto with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. This concert was broadcasted by the BBC London. In 2003 Dora went on her first Japan tour with the Tokyo Ensemble Orchestra in Tokyo (Bunka Kaikan Hall), Yamanami International Music Festival, Obuse International Music Festival and to Saitama. She played several concerts in the years to follow including an appearance in London Kensington Palace, the Hungarian Culture Centres in London, Bucharest, Rome, Paris, Helsinki, Stuttgart, also in the BBC London, and “Gesellschaft für Musik und Theater” in Vienna, in Mauritius and Budapest as well. She performed C.Ph.E.Bach Flute Concerto in D-minor with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra in Vienna Konzerthaus.
In Hungary Dora became even more popular in 2003 when winning the Budapest International Flute Competition and also a special prize for the best performance of Szervánszky`s flute concerto.
In 2003 she won the audition of the Young Concert Artists Management Company in Leipzig then the final audition in New York and that led to a 3-year contract with the company. She had the debut concerts in Carnegie Hall, New York and in Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. in 2006 where she received unique reviews from the Washington Post and New York Sun. The Lincoln Center debut with St. Luke Orchestra in New York in April 2007 got much appreciation in the New York Times.
Dora toured with pianist Steven Beck in the States and played solo recitals in many prestigious concert halls.
The International Marlboro Music Festival invited her to take part in their unique event in July-August 2005 in Marlboro, Vermont, USA.
Dora was appointed “The best Hungarian Musician of the Year” in 2005 by the Gramofon Music Magazine and she received the “Hungarian Classical Music Award”. In 2008 she won the Junior Prima Prize in Hungary.
She appeared as a soloist many times with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer and in March 2010 she performed Nielsen Flute Concerto with the orchestra and Adam Fischer during the Budapest Spring Festival in the Palace of Arts.
As a chamber musician Dora Seres is a member of Carion woodwind Quintett. Since the success in the Danish Radio Music Competition in 2004, Carion has launched an international music career. The highlights include Rheingau Festival, Kissingen Sommer Festival, Usedomer Festival, Münster H1 Master Series, Dubai Master Series, Al Bustan Festival, Helsinki Festival, Roskilde Festival, Luisiana Concert Series, regular tours for Swedish organisations like Musik I Väst, Musik I Syd, Musik I Halland, Musik a Gävleborg and others. One of their biggest success was in March 2018 when they performed in Zürich in Tonhalle Maag Concert Hall. The BBC Proms in London also invited them to play in Royal Albert Hall in August 2022.
Carion has won prizes at several chamber music competitions, amount them the Danish National Radio Chamber Music Competition in 2004. They placed first at the Marco Fiorino International Chamber Music Competition in Turin, Italy in 2006. In May of 2011 Carion won Bronze medal in Osaka International Chamber Music Festa.
They have been selected – as one of the 10 best chamber music groups in the world to perform at the 1st “Classical Next” International Festival in Munich. Their showcase was so successful that they played twice in the “Bayerischer Rundfunk” as well.
The group has a special way of performing music, they play everything by heart with own choreography on stage. Their first CD was released by Dacapo in April 2013 where you can hear pieces from Herman D. Koppel, Anders Koppel and Benjamin Koppel. Their “Schauspiel” CD released by “Ars production” was nominated for the International Classical Music Awards in 2015. They recorded pieces by Beethoven, Carrapatoso, Ligeti, Montague, Rosetti, Ibert, and DiCapua`s “O sole mio.” In September 2015 a new CD came out by Odradek Records. The title was “Nielsen`s footsteps” and they recorded Carl Nielsen`s Quintett and pieces by Senstius, Emborg and Schultz. In 2016 Carion made another recording with Odradek records: The “Mephisto” Album with Liszt: Grand Etudes de Paganini, No.24, Mozart : Serenade No. 12 in c-minor ( Nachtmusik K.388 ), Shostakovich Suite, Bartok: Romanian Dances and Liszt: Mephisto Waltz. No.1. In 2017 Carion follows the tradition to record at least 1 CD each year when their second latest CD came out, the “Northwind” with music by Vasks, Plakidis and Zemzaris. In 2018 they recorded their last CD where they performed pieces from Hindemith Mozart, Pärt, Stravinsky, Zemlinsky and Arian. The CD was recorded by Odradek and the title was “Dreams of Freedom”.
Apart from solo and chamber music appearances Dora is also an active orchestra musician. She was the principal flutist of the Danish National Chamber Orchestra in Copenhagen 2006-2015. From 2015 the orchestra`s name has changed to Danish Chamber Orchestra where she continues playing solo flute. She also had the same position in the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra 2002-2006. Dora had a contract with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra as solo flutist August – December in 2020., than another contract as co-principal flutist in Malmö Opera from January to June in 2021. She played as guest principal flute in many prestigious orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Köln, and Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt, Germany. She performed in Zurich Philharmonia this season playing principal flute in “La Traviata.”
Dora Seres had her first solo CD release by Hungaroton in 2004. The title “Flautissimo” describes the wide palette of music presented: she plays sonatas by Mouquet, Liebermann, Feld, a virtuoso divertimento by Francaix, a rhapsody by Jean-Michel Damase, and the lyrical Aria by Dohnanyi. Her chamber music partner was Emese Mali.
The second CD was released in December 2012 in a partnership with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and Hungaroton with Dora`s own arrangements of Paganini`s 24 Caprices for violin. The CD got great reviews in Germany in “Der Spiegel”, Clarino and “Deutschland Kultur Radio”.
Dora Seres began to teach at The Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen in August 2021. She has currently five flute students in her class.
