Szatmári Zsolt

Graduated with honours from the Liszt Academy of Music (Budapest) in 1991 as a student of Béla Kovács. He is a prizewinner of national and international competitions, and was awarded a Yamaha scholarship while still a university student.

In 1991, he joined the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra as principal clarinetist. From 1992 to 2000, he served as principal clarinetist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Zoltán Kocsis invited him to join the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra as solo clarinetist in 2000. In 2002, he was awarded the orchestra’s Artist of the Year title.

He has been teaching at the Liszt Academy of Music since 1993, initially as assistant lecturer, later as senior lecturer, associate professor, and eventually full professor. He obtained his DLA doctoral degree in 2013, and completed his habilitation in 2019. Since the following year, he has been a full professor, and since 2022 he has served as Head of the Woodwind and Brass Department.

He holds masterclasses at leading universities across the United States, Europe, Israel, Japan and Iceland. He is regularly invited as a jury member or the jury chairman at national and international clarinet and chamber music competitions.

As a soloist, he has performed with Hungary’s major symphony orchestras. As a chamber musician, he has appeared with the Budapest Wind Ensemble and and various other formations at international festivals and on concert tours across the United States, Israel, Europe, and Japan.
